The physical and emotional effects of pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period are A LOT to deal with. Throw in the medical bills arriving from all directions, and the once normally-functioning parents of a newborn can find themselves in a sleep-deprived, stressed-out, can\u2019t-squeeze-one-more-thing-into-naptime mess!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you get your postpartum panties in a bunch, here are some hints for avoiding unexpected pregnancy-related costs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Know your health insurance coverage\/benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-6.png?resize=211%2C211&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2047\" width=\"211\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-6.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-6.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-6.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-6.png?resize=190%2C190&amp;ssl=1 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does your policy cover maternity care? Thanks to the ACA, most health insurance plans cover maternity care\u2014but beware short-term health insurance policies and cost-sharing plans that are not bound by ACA regulations!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No maternity coverage? (Long story, but this actually happened to me when I unexpectedly found myself pregnant with twins back in 2010, so it can happen to anybody\ud83d\ude02.) You may be able to qualify for Medicaid or find other maternity coverage (check out <a href=\"(https:\/americanpregnancy.org\/options-for-unplanned-pregnancy\/maternity-insurance\/\">AmericanPregnancy.org<\/a>)\u2026or reach out to your healthcare providers\/facilities NOW to negotiate self-pay discounts!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Know your out-of-pocket costs (i.e. your deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowing this information helps you to plan for upcoming expenses AND helps you to realize if you\u2019ve paid more than you should during a health-plan year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Utilize in-network providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is your OBGYN in-network? How about the hospital at which you plan to deliver? And the ultrasound tech\/radiologist performing your ultrasounds (if performed outside of your OBGYN\u2019s office)? The lab where your bloodwork will be sent? And any specialists you\u2019re referred to along the way? You DO have control over where your labs are sent and where you receive any of these non-emergent services!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Know your plan&#8217;s prior auth\/pre-certification requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most plans don\u2019t require authorization for delivery, unless your inpatient stay exceeds 48 hours for a vaginal delivery or 96 hours for a C-section, but check for prior auth requirements for any non-routine care you receive (i.e. amniocentesis, in-utero procedures, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Stay on top of the bills as they come in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Match each and every bill with its associated EOB <em>as you receive them<\/em> to make sure your insurance processed the charges correctly and the provider is billing you correctly. If the amount listed under patient responsibility on the EOB doesn\u2019t match the bill you receive, don\u2019t pay it without investigating first!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep a running tally of amounts that have been applied to your deductible and coinsurance, so you don\u2019t pay more in out-of-pocket expenses than you should!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t put off investigating charges\/bills that don\u2019t look right until after baby comes! Those billing companies aren\u2019t going to give a rat\u2019s batooty that you\u2019ve been too overwhelmed with a newborn to deal with your medical bills\u2014they\u2019ll send you to collections faster than you can say, \u201cWhat the heck did we just do to our lives?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-8.png?resize=195%2C195&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2051\" width=\"195\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-8.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-8.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-8.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/clearhealthcareadvocacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Untitled-design-8.png?resize=190%2C190&amp;ssl=1 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2714Get help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you end up with bills you\u2019re uncertain about owing\u2014and you\u2019re too overwhelmed, confused, and\/or tired to figure things out on your own\u2014hire a patient advocate to straighten things out on your behalf!
